In this world many people suffer from epilepsy and take serious drugs with catastrophic side effects. However there is a novel view about appearance of epilepsy and prevention of it without damage to other organs and systems.
Basically epilepsy appears when there is disruption of relations of 4 main neurotransmitters in synapse: Aspartat, Gaba, Glycine and Glutamate. I will not go deeply in explaining here how processes between these "friends" are going(you can read it in links below), but will mention that the main role here plays transport in their channels of ions of Ca, K and Cl. At one point Gaba and Glycine get decreased and on contrary Glutamate and Aspartat start to be exaggerated. Therefore cause of epilepsy can be deficiency of Gaba and Glycine. Main medications (Depakine in particular) against epilepsy do not regulate levels of Gaba or Glycine, but cut sodium flow and reduce the excessive electrical activity which has temporary effect, therefore dosage must be increased to keep it going and it will not treat the cause, it is just treatment of symptoms or saying more simple we do clean the water on the floor, but roof still has a hole. However more advantageous could be to improve levels of Gaba and Glycine itself and situation will be resolved. Therefore the most attention needs to be given to neuroprotective substances and not to blockers.
As herbal support I recommend Tea of Lavender 1-2 teaspoons for 200 ml infusion at bedtime. It slows down Glutamate release, enhance Gaba receptors, blocks ca channels, protects cerebellar granular cells from glutamate-induced neurotoxicity .
From amino acids the most effective Taurine 500 mg in combination with L-theanine 500 mg.
The idea is that to take GABA as a food supplement is not effective as it does not go through hematoencephalic barrier, but Taurine and L-theanine do go and specifically Taurine promotes not only neuronal hyperpolarization through the opening of chloride channels but stimulates both GABA (alfa and beta) receptors, as well of Glycine, increases GABA levels and protects against excitotoxicity that results from glutamate mediation. L-theanine on other hand increases the production of GABA and dopamine, while it protects the cells of the hippocampus, (responsable for memory and learning) from oxidation damage. Moreover, in vitro studies L-theanin decreased significantly low-density lipoprotein. Both Taurine and L-theanine work in synergy and potent each other.
